It looked like they’d called upon TV’s Miranda Hart to cameo on guitar whilst they plodded through a forgettable array of indie rock numbers. Johnny arrived in a burgundy, button-up blazer scattered with pins, and without anytime for a trivial preamble, he propelled himself like a juggernaut into single ‘The Right Thing Right’. His slider explored the neck of the guitar and later a melodic solo pierced above the noise.

For a second, I noticed the intense strobe lighting doing more to singe the retina of the aging audience rather than insight the riotous behaviour of old. Either way, as he played his first homage to the Smiths of the evening ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’, there was a consensus that no one would be stopping him from treating us with this hit, although a couple of panting, one-time rockers could have perhaps used a second to catch their breath.

It was this mature crowd that was so befittingly paralleled by second single, ‘Upstarts’. In a sense, Johnny’s ulterior purpose for the tour was to instil a sense of youth and energy back to into the listeners. He wrapped them in a cocoon of distortion and reverb to send them back to nostalgic memories of larger stages and later nights. As you’d expect, that didn’t always fit into the intimacy of the Junction as a venue, but there would be no holding back for a big icon with an even bigger sound.

The band continued to play through the other songs from ‘The Messenger’, and they were occasionally interspersed with confused muffles from Johnny about high-rise flats and other anecdotes about 1980s Manchester. When hecklers replied to him, he managed to handle them like a seasoned pro; Smiths’ requests were met with lines like ‘not heard that one,’ to make people look yelping nobs.

Towards the latter half of the show there was a strong atmosphere of a group consciousness amongst forty-something blokes who spilt their beer and detritus onto an already sticky floor. The refreshing lack of smart phones being obnoxiously waved in the air was an upside to this, making me thankful that there are people that can appreciate a gig without having to place a screen between them and the experience.

It was at this point that the liveliness of the gig began to plateau slightly, and Johnny adopted a strumming technique rather than his eminent and iconic picking style. This deceleration allowed them to open up bridges and breakdowns into longer sections where Marr’s fingers explored more satisfying tones and everyone was awash with mystic jangling. These segments in between his singles allowed the set to breathe a little, although sometimes for too long when spectators were waiting restlessly for the next recognisable song.

Many of the faithful would have waiting over two decades for this experience, and he did spoil them with a couple Smiths’ classics, like ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’, which was introduced as a Mancunian folk song. But what was most bewildering was his encore performance of the Clash’s, ‘I Fought The Law’. The rowdy middle-aged soldiers gave it there all to find their inner punk, but only really fought to remain balanced and keep the sweat out of their faces.

To finish the gig, ‘How Soon Is Now?’, well about 10:20, Johnny, but too early to finish! He’d given the crowd exactly what we wanted, plenty of Marr and a couple classics, and proved that despite his diminutive frame he’s still got a huge presence. It may have been bereft of any imagination or audience-involvement, and essentially a live cut of the album, but I’m sure it appeased his devotees.

Overall the gig was enjoyable, I now hope that he can begin work on producing one of those allusive experimental records that all great guitarists do at some point in their career.

A good night was to be had.

First off was Breedlings a new band that formed late last year, they consist of members of Ill Murray and Lemon escapades and a couple of other bands to have graced the Cambridge scene. Their set was punchy and their high intensity style shone through, creating a bold, thick sound. The set unfortunately was very short and so it was hard to settle into it, it was almost a tease as it didn’t reveal much about the band however when deriving from several strong Cambridge groups their future is looking pretty promising.

By the time Bloody Knees came on with guitars slung grungily low, the atmosphere had picked up a little and the Portland had began to fill up. Although ‘fun’ is a bit of a weak adjective to use, their fast paced near on surf rock exuded liveliness. With a personal favourite being ‘Eyes, Ears, Ohs and Yous.’ It’s chorus of ‘woahs’ being catchy enough for audience members to follow along which is key for an up and coming band.

Carousels’ performance came as quite bitter sweet as it was announced on the day that it would be their last. having male and female vocals at the same time created an almost feather like harmony which drifted above two guitars. This could have become quite cumbersome live however their weighty riff work dropping in and out and uplifting melody lines especially apparent in songs like ‘Sweet Honey’ meant there was room to breath without the audience feeling drowned by thuggish guitar work. The performance was dreamlike and vigorously uplifting. Carousels will be missed without a doubt.

Luls were the final band of the night with the, they brought their strikingly anthemic music. after learning that founder Adam Pendergarst is the ex live bassist from The Big Pink it then became apparent to me that strangely, there is a correlation between the two band’s styles. Lul’s fairly high pitched vocals paired with scratchy guitars that guitars that seemed to have an effect driven him through out the set, created quite. The atmosphere and easily enveloped the Portland in a cacophony of energy and power.

A successful start to the club night and if you enjoyed the night or are green with envy of those that were there be sure to get down to the corner house for Slate The Disco’s next event on the 22nd March.

The evening started with C Joynes, a Cambridge based virtuoso guitarist creating a polyphony of rhythm and finger picking all on one instrument. His style can only be described as a brewing pot of Latin, blue grass, folk and blues played on a classical guitar with only a few words of thankyous muttered between each piece.

Unlike your usual support act, guest Thomas McCarthy joined Lee’s set and sung intermittently between Lee’s performance. McCarthy’s traditional Irish traveller music was sung completely acapella and told stories of mostly solemn subject matters (except for the one about getting drunk with a pig… no kidding!) The aspect that makes McCarthy’s performance so real and organic were the back stories of how his Irish traveller mother had taught him the folk songs he so poignantly delivered.

Lee’s set was slightly more upbeat than McCarthy’s somber vocals with certain songs like ‘The Ballad Of George Collins’ rousing an otherwise staid audience into clapping and bobbing their heads. Alike McCarthy, almost all of Lee’s set derived from Irish traveller or gypsy descent and after each tune he would tell a story of how he had acquired it from a past teacher or mentor. It’s very east to get lost in San Lee’s music as his hypnotic voice does seem to carry you off into a dazed state, accompanied by the gentle swells of violin, cello and occasional shruti box it wasn’t long before I was beginning to feel lulled, along with the rest of a very subdued audience.

What is so magical about this music is it’s spirituality in the way that it isn’t just learned over the Internet or blundering lay crafted over beers between band members but is instead taught through generations and family, with real appreciation for it’s origins and the elders that pass it along, so that more of us can hear their enchanting tales.

Preview ¬“¬ No Future Shock

Phoenix - Entertainment

The French indie pop band who can’t stop gaining popularity are due to return with an album entitled “Bankrupt!” and this is the first full-length cut from it. Complete with a Siouxie and the Banshees-inspired faux-oriental synth line, it’s catchy and totally festival-ready, especially bearing in mind their upcoming Coachella headline spot - arguably the biggest of their career so far.

Scott & Charlene’s Wedding - Two Weeks

A sunny, jangly indie jam from the Australian Craig Dermody, resident in New York, named after an event in the Aussie soap Neighbours, in case you weren’t aware. Despite its shiny, summery surface it’s a story of separation and distance, brimming with frustration and anxiety.

Tempers - Eyes Wide Wider

A slice of moody electro-tinged post-punk. Full of late-80s gloom, some My Bloody Valentine, a little Sonic Youth and a touch of the Joy Division charm. It’s also available as a free download here from the Pendu Sound website

Alex Bleeker & The Freaks - Don’t Look Down

In a similar vein to Scott & Charlene… is this lo-fi, bluesy indie pop of this part-time bunch of members of Real Estate and assorted other bands. It’s another bittersweet pop song from their new album, due out in a few weeks.

Cass McCombs - If You Loved Me Before

Cass McCombs - If You Loved Me Before… by Cass McCombs

The latest offering from Cass McCombs is thoroughly miserable - it seems as if Mr McC’s emotional state is going downhill and gathering speed. The guitars sound downtrodden, even the Nintendo-esque synths lean heavily towards the meleancholy. But it’s strangely enjoyable - catharsis? Borderline sadism? I don’t know, but even though it sounds like a sonic suicide note composed on Garage Band, I quite like it and I still love Cass.

Music Of 2013 ¬“¬ Jamie Lidell

‘Music of 2013’ is a series of articles talking about our favourite music for 2013 here at Under The Music Tree. Our contributors have had a long and hard think, and this is what they’ve come up with…

Huntingdon-born Jamie Lidell exudes soulful genius, somehow moulded by his childhood in Cambridgeshire. He’s shaped and refined a sound that will be demonstrated on his eponymous, new album, which will see him broaden his horizons with a more experimental style nurtured by a continued tenure at Warp Records. His personalised blend of RnB and Electronica promises an unusual album, but one that will surely be anticipated as a defining record of 2013.

Listen to one of his teasers, sounds like the Aristocats got their paws on some serious musical tech.

‘Music of 2013’ is a series of articles talking about our favourite music for 2013 here at Under The Music Tree. Our contributors have had a long and hard think, and this is what they’ve come up with…

Fred Bambridge (Bumbridge) is the legendary founder of blog It’s All Indie. This is what he had to say about Seasfire on his site.

“After much anticipation we’ve finally got round to our number one Sound of 2013 artist, after a string of highly acclaimed demos, a sweet cover of a Lucy Rose track, a stand-alone single and an amazing EP, the Bristol based four-piece have had quite a year!

Supporting The Neighbourhood, Bastille, King Charles and Alpines (to name a few) and even playing at Reading & Leeds festival they’ve easily gained a whole heap of fans off those performances! When we saw them play at Reading and at The Lexington we knew that they were the real deal!

They’ve even been announced as one of the most blogged artists on the BBC’s Blog Zeitgeist at #13 beating Grimes, The XX and Django Django. 2013 will hopefully see more great sounds from them with an album (hopefully), more live shows and more fans getting the Seasfire bug! Their rise from early demos to this is amazing, with an album hopefully out in 2013 I can easily see them being a massive name come the end of the next year! We loved the EP, BUY it if you’re smart enough! We highly recommend that you listen to them right now! We’re urging all of you to go and see them, you know you can’t miss out on the next best thing!”

Due to technical difficulties involving Tumblr, we’re delayed a few days but here we are nonetheless, providing some lovely listening to brighten your weekend.

Blank Realm - Cleaning Up My Mess

Blank Realm are an Australian quartet (three siblings plus one) who make heartfelt, bluesy jangle pop. A little 90s, a little 70s, I’m a little in love. You can pick up their album Go Easy which is scheduled for a wider re-release on the 4th of March.

Kurt Vile - Wakin’ On A Pretty Day

Ladies and gentlemen, Kurt Vile is back. Yes, it’s over nine minutes long but fans will be happy that it looks like we can expect another album of chilled out guitar music with a classic rock written by a grunge fan vibe - the Kurt we’ve come to know and love. You can download this for free here and the new album, Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze, drops on the 9th of April.

Melt Yourself Down - Fix My Life

A bizzarre, unholy, psychedelic world-music funk freakout with weird yet catchy jazz sax and synthy effects. Complete with incomprehensible shouty-howly vocals and a video that feels like an acid trip. Brilliant.

Devendra Banhart - Mi Negrita

Gorgeous, sexy Spanish-language number from Devendra Banhart’s upcoming album Mala. It’s the third track he’s released so far and the third language he’s titled a track in. When it’s February and you need to imagine you’re somewhere exotic, this is the tune to do it to.

The Weather Station - Mule In The Flowers

The Weather Station is the alias of Toronto-dwelling singer-songwriter Tamara Lindeman and Baby Eagle is also known as Steve Lambke, former singer of Constantines. Together they have created this lovely, charming, restrained heartbreaking song about love gone awry (which you can download for free through their Soundcloud). It’s part of a series of six duets featuring Lindeman and three other artists, released on The Weather Station’s Bandcamp here.

Blisseyes are a Cambridge quartet who have already landed support slots with the likes of Coasts and Loom. Formerly known as Cooke & The Feedbacks (or Cookie & The Feedbacks as they were erroneously billed at one gig) they create atmospheric post-punk/indie-rock. They’re so new they actually don’t have anything online; so go see them live.

This track was from last year, but it’s the best example of Seye’s work. He now has a few tracks, and I believe he has an album out later this year. He’s the younger brother of Metronomy bassist Gbenga. And he also hates me. I’m really excited about him for 2013 though.

The artist I am most excited about is the collaboration of Evidence and Alchemist undergoing the pseudonym ‘Step Brothers’, on their release of the album ‘Lord Steppington’. The reason behind my excitement is that Evidence was on the of the first artists I listened to whilst getting into hip hop, however since my tastes matured I came to notice a greater amount of artists who appealed to me more. But recently I heard a clip from one of the tracks of the album, due to be released later this year, which got me all excited as it was a side of both Evidence and Alchemist I have never heard before.
Evidence recently tweeted: “I find it amazing that the most ghetto sounding music I have made in recent times was created in Malibu w a member of Incubus. #MikeE” - which shows that the album may be taking a completely different route to both Alchemist and Evidence’s normal style, seeing as I wouldn’t necessarily call their music ‘ghetto’.
Anyway keep an eye for the drop, gonna be dope. Peace.

Radiohead’s mastermind frontman Thom Yorke has joined up with one of the best bassists of this current age, Flea, as well as long time producer Nigel Godrich to create a supergroup I thought I could only dream of.
Their latest single, ‘Judge, Jury And Executioner’ provides a brilliant combination of classic Yorke with running basslines from Flea and modern age electronica influences that have created a sound initially similar to Radiohead, but at the same time introduces a fresh sound which is brilliant.
‘Amok’ out 26th Feb

Entering the Indie arena in 2008 with a set of songs which were, at times, impenetrably trendy math-disco, Foals have built themselves quite a CV, with two top-ten selling albums, an NME award and a mercury prize nomination for their second album, Total Life Forever. Their eagerly anticipated third album, Holy Fire is out on 11 February.

Even before you press play, this is a really beautifully presented piece of work. The cover image is stunning; dusky silhouettes of men and women on horseback standing in placid rolling waves. The album begins with a gentle thud and builds and builds to noisy wails from front-man, Yannis Phillippaki and heavily distorted guitars. Titled Prelude, it’s clear that the band have been thinking more about the overall sound and shape of the record. Having worked with them on their immortal single, Spanish Sahara, Foals have been developing their relationship with the London Contemporary Orchestra, who appear in most tracks on Holy Fire.

The second and third tunes are the singles, the slick and sultry Inhaler, and the more jovial My Number, definitely one for the party playlist.

Bad Habit is a stock Foals-filler in my opinion. But it’s great to hear more expression from Phillippaki’s vocals - the hollers on debut album, Antidotes gave the impression that he wasn’t up to it, but these tracks bring out different timbres in his voice.

The complexity of the percussion that rattles away under Everytime makes what could be quite a cheesy track another danceable number and definitely a contender for the next single release.

The would-be Spanish Sahara in this album takes the form of Late night. It’s quicker to build and a little less epic, but the way that Phillippaki’s voice scrapes at the breaking point of his chest voice, guitars whine and the staccato notes cut through gives it the same poignant intention.

Out of the Woods is pretty minimal in terms of material, essentially the same vibe as Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams (something in there reminds me of The Sims too…) and with every line ending with “…Out of the woods” it’s all pretty basic, but after a few listens, it’s as memorable as the two singles.

The bizarrely named Milk & Black Spiders shimmers with delayed guitars and a pulsing half time chorus climaxes into the full force of the Foals sound, with the addition of sweeping strings. This is what the whole album has been working up to. There’s almost a worry that they will cop out with a polite fade-out, but worry not.

Providence begins with a gospel-like vocal, almost something Mercury prize winners, Alt-J might pull out, but we’re thrust quickly back into the Foals sound world, and venturing somewhere darker too, a mood which sinks smoothly down into the penultimate track, Stepson. This downbeat track is effortlessly moody, the rotating ethereal groove sounding not dissimilar to Albatross by Wild Beasts.

The haunting Moon completes the record, as if the disco ball that’s been spinning for the past 45 minutes has slowed down for the last dance at the Indie disco and it’s nearly time to go home.

Holy Fire is undoubtedly a more commercial move for Foals, but also demonstrates a mature voice from the band. I personally can’t wait to hear these tracks played at a late night at a main stage of a festival, these tunes were built for big things.

‘The 1975’, a 4 piece from Manchester, fuse rock, rhythmic vocals and good dose of pop guitar hooks into an amazing end product. Their light-hearted song writing skills come across beautifully on the hits ‘Sex’ and ‘Chocolate’. Just listen to see why I think they are gonna be huge this year.

‘Music of 2013’ is a series of articles talking about our favourite music for 2013 here at Under The Music Tree. Our contributors have had a long and hard think, and this is what they’ve come up with…

Famously championed by the late DJ, John Peel called them ‘always different, always the same’. Over the course of 29 albums The Fall have remained one of the most relevant live and studio acts, from 1979’s ‘Live At The Witch Trials’ into 2013, which will see them release their landmark 30th LP. The band’s sound revolves around the only original member, Mark E Smith, his growling vocals over the bass-driven, jagged assault of the band. Recent live shows have seen new songs aired like ‘Spider’, ‘Hitman’ and ‘No Respect’ and from the videos online it could well be a cracker. Information from Cherry Red, the band’s label, has been sparse as yet, but an April/ May release is expected.

For fans of: Wire/ Post-Punk

For several years Ely resident Will Law was been making La’s inspired guitar pop, but this is the first release recorded away from his house. Originally he led the band Just William & The Outlaws, who most notably played at The Junction, but a sequence of unreliable members convinced him to go solo and begin to play gigs under the moniker Just William. Since going solo he has landed a number of big support slots with the likes of Bluetones frontman Mark Morriss and Miles Kane support band Folks.

The ‘Way Back When’ EP leans heavily on the influence of Will’s heroes, The La’s, Bob Dylan and more recently Jake Bugg.

Opening track ‘Way Back When’, much like the rest of the release, is a stripped back affair with only voice and guitar. The vocals sound like a leap up from the early kitchen demos with the clean studio production. The pretty hook and forlorn lyrics of ‘I Just Wanna See Her Face Again’ make it the stand-out track and gets pretty close to real classic pop songwriting.

‘It Ain’t Alright’ is one of the more upbeat and politically charged of the five tracks, and is followed by ‘Caroline’ one of the older tracks.

The final track, ‘Get Me Out Of Here’ follows a similar line of attack to round off the EP.

Jake Bugg better watch out.
